In fact with the ATI chipset I was offered no choices at all. Again, I wasn't given the choice by PowerDVD 10 to select quiet through noisy. The audio wasn't quite as loud as the re-injected Asus Xonar U3, but it was much better than the audio from the Asus Nvidia 610. In theory this video card's HDCP should have been too low as well. All of these sounds sources came from ASUS. I then tried replacing that setup with an Asus ATI HD6450 video card. Of course the menu options in PowerDVD 10 changed for this new audio device and no longer offered me the choices of quiet to loud but instead offered a speaker count and environment type. At 50% volume it was more than acceptable with a good quality of sound (not great but good). The volume level from the same HDMI input on the TV was quite a bit better. I removed the HDCP from the HDMI out of the NVidia card and inserted the audio from the Asus Xonar U3. I got an Asus Xonar U3 (USB Dolby sound device supports SPDIF out with Dolby Headphone surround for 5.1). I have a box from eBay that can strip HDCP from HDMI and insert stereo or PCM/bitstream SPDIF into the HDMI out of it. I can understand that on laptops the speakers may not have the dynamic range required but this doesn't make sense it's not a limitation of my TV's audio at all. I did notice that if I set it to 'compressed audio settings' for noisy rooms it was louder but I have good ears and it was distorted when set like that. With the volume at 100% it was barely good enough for a 100 sq ft room. The volume was way too low set on quiet in the PowerDVD audio settings. It has an SATA LG Blueray DVD rewritable drive internal and came with CyberLink PowerDVD 10.Īt first I put an ASUS built NVidia 610 chipset PCI-E video card in that system and tried to use HDMI with HDCP.
